Unique historic style which we like. Good location to spend the night before our drive on The Great Alpine Highway to Christchurch

Great Heritage Hotel

Lovely old hotel with theme rooms. Bar and restaurant on site with a good menu. Breakfast available for extra charge. Small gloworm site behind hotel for curious tourists.

Pleasant stay in a quirky suite decorated with Victorian fixtures and fittings. Spacious rooms with all mod cons. Good pub food although continental breakfast was over priced. Worth the stay for the nostalgic atmosphere.
Graham, 1-night trip

6/10 Good

Really appreciated the unique decor and ability to control climate given the heritage nature of the building (heater/air conditioner and heated blanket).

We stayed in the Sedden suite. It was a glorious furnished and decorated in high Victorian style. Included a antique sleigh bed, a Victorian dining room/living room. The bathroom included a claw footed bathtub. It was a real treat.

We had 2 different rooms. Both were very clean and spacious. It was a bit strange that 1 was at a different location just down the road a shor bit. Less than a 1/2 mile but was not adequately marked or lighted for arriving in the darkness. The second location was a complete house or cottage and was very spacious and cute. Once we were in we were excited to stay in a quaint location but seemed strange at first. I would recommend either location for a stay with a group.

Back to Kumara

A one night stay on a roadie down the West Coast heading for the snow. We have stayed here before and frankly, wouldn't consider anywhere else. This time we had a miner's cottage (free upgrade!), it was warm and quirky which we love. Ate in the bar, a real kiwi pub experience and friendly locals. The area is very interesting

Victorian Suite in the BNZ bank building was fantastic. Loved sleeping the 4-poster bed and soaking in the slipper bath. Relaxing having our own lounge area. Enjoyed both evening meals we had across at the hotel.

Really liked the Victoria Suite. Si roomy and a very different experience to a boring hotel room. Loved the claw foot bath. Would have loved bath oils. The fresh milk for tea/coffee was a lovely touch. Will definitely recommend.

Very well furnished with vintage furniture and accessories. Walk across the street for good food.

We pre booked a room and after booking in we decided we would like to upgrade. No problem. We upgraded to a minors cottage. What a fantastic room. Words alone cant explain the decadence and decor in the room. Only death will stop us staying again. Good meals that are reasonably priced. Absolutely loved the experiece in a country town.

This property is very unique and one used by at least some of the bicycle tours. There are sheds for charging e-bikes, cottages, rooms in the old Bank of New Zealand and the hotel. We stayed in a cottage which was excellent for our needs, being able to have breakfast, cook when we wanted or go to the Hotel restaurant which had very good food. We were within easy commuting distance to various sites and hiking trails, that were excellent.

It has everything we needed. Big rooms and several beds. Very clean and comfortable!

Don't miss this gem!

We loved our stay at this hotel! We stayed in the Queen Victoria Suite in the bank building, and it was fantastic. Our kids LOVED how fancy it was. It's beautifully restored, and much airier and brighter than it appears in photos. Tons of space for our family of five. We had dinner in the restaurant, and while the service was incredibly slow (I think they forgot about us after they put our meals down, because we didn't see another server for 45 minutes or more) the food was very good, and luckily there's a yard for the kids to run around a bit. The playground on the property was very much in need of repair/upgrade, but I assume that'll be done eventually. Breakfast was basic but definintely met our needs. The person who checked us in also let us know there were glow worm caves on the property, which was a huge highlight for us! Aside from dinner, the service and care at this property was fantastic. Kumara is off the beaten path somewhat, but it's worth it to stay at this gem of a hotel. I only wish we could have stayed another night! My kids will be talking about this place for years to come.

Charming and quaint

This charming historic hotel on the main 6 highway was an enjoyable stay for one night. One had to eat there as there were no other restaurants nearby, but the dinner was excellent and the restaurant/bar area pleasant. The continental breakfast was adequate. However as they had kept the 1876 hotel in keeping with the age of the property the furniture in the room was old and bulky and hence used up a great deal of available space in the room. There was a TV but it was very small.

Accueil aimable, literie confortable, chambre assez calme (proche d’une route mais assez peu fréquentée la nuit). Lavabos vraiment petits. Restaurant moyen (d’autres sont à proximité)
