5 Best Night Markets in Singapore

Where to shop at night in Singapore

Singapore’s shopping scene is more closely associated with gleaming 21st-century megamalls, but this is Southeast Asia after all, and no Southeast Asian city is complete without at least a handful of cool markets. The relaxed atmosphere and casual approach to shopping and snacking make them a great place for visitors.

Most of Singapore’s night markets are located near the city center, around some of the popular ethnic enclaves such as Chinatown, Little India, and the Arabic Quarter. So, skip the malls for an evening and head to one of these vibrant markets in Singapore.

1. Chinatown Street Market

Known for food and souvenirs

Good for: Families, Shoppers, Photo, Nightlife

Running every day but only really getting busy in the evening, Chinatown Street Market is one of the most popular of its type in Singapore, offering a range of fashion items, antiques, souvenirs, and electronics. What we really love about this market, however, is the wealth of street food and cheap restaurants all crammed into the relatively small space.

Also known as ‘Chinatown Food Street,’ this outside hawker-style area is where you’ll find all the Singaporean classics such as stingray, satay, roast duck, chicken over rice, kway teow, dim sum, and laksa, with most dishes going for around S$5–10. Find the market on Pagoda Street, Trengganu Street, Sago Lane, Smith Street, and Temple Street near Chinatown MRT Station. Read more

This must-visit market is one of the biggest, cheapest, and hottest places to come shopping in the whole of Singapore. Many of the little trinkets here such as souvenir key chains, postcards, and stationery are available at pocket money prices, and there is a whole range of clothes on offer, too.

There are quality items for all tastes so spend some time looking for things that fit your personal style. Wardrobe staples such as jeans, t-shirts, and shoes are all very affordable, and if you underestimated the power of the Singaporean sun you can pick up a hat or sunglasses here without blowing your budget. Little India’s Tekka Centre is an old-fashioned hawker market offering a more authentic taste of Singapore’s market scene compared to other locations. There’s a huge array of South Asian food stalls with plenty of vegetarian options at very attractive prices. You can’t go wrong with a biriyani and mango lassi.

The multi-purpose center, located on the corner of Buffalo and Serangoon Road, doubles up as a wet market selling fresh seafood and vegetables on the ground floor, while you’ll find some clothing and hardware stores upstairs. Read more

Good for: Shoppers, Nightlife

Difficult to miss with its bold orange façade shining brightly on the already-colorful Serangoon Road, this complex presents a good collection of Indian and Arabian clothing, fabrics and homeware.

Meander through the series of tight alleyways to uncover traditional dresses, dried herbs and spices, flamboyant accessories, colorful artwork, aromatic incense and sweet shops – all for discounted prices. To avoid the crowds, visit in the day; to avoid the heat, visit in the evening (a bit of a catch 22 we know).

5. Lau Pa Sat

A top spot for satay

A victorian style market with tall skyscrapers behind it.

Good for: Food, Nightlife

The literal translation of its name is “old market” and it is indeed one of Singapore’s oldest hawker centers, housed in a restored and modernized building that retains its Victorian wrought iron structure. Originally a wet market, now it’s famous for the delicious range of foods that represent the multicultural nature of Singapore.

A highlight of the market is its Satay Street, a whole row of satay vendors serving succulent grilled meat or seafood skewers with a side of peanut sauce. Grab a table at the large, shared outdoor seating area and soak up the atmosphere while you eat.
