Scenic rambling.

I had a 4 night break to explore the countryside in South Devon and Malborough is close enough to the sea to be able to walk there without needing a car which I wanted and it is near a bus stop so you can go by train which I did. You can see some of the more out of the way places by foot which are not commercialised and there are plenty of footpaths and lanes to get around. there are a lot of options for walking and day trips.I had a single room which was economical with a newly refurbished bathroom. There was some traffic noise as I had a bedroom in the front.

The business is no longer a going concern, no staff, fire risks, lack of lighting in public areas, on-line advertising is totally misleading (outdated). One has to feel for the poor Landlord trying in vain to keep going.

Disgusting Tip! Don’t stay!!

So disgusting we had to walk out, and leave. The photos must be from years ago and under different ownership. The hotel is dated and in a terrible state. Creepy statues, ornaments, and junk-shop items swamp every room. The bed linen smelt damp, like a wet dishcloth, so I couldn’t sleep in the bed. Junk and clutter line the hallways, and it was filthy. I think it is so mis-sold it should be removed from this site as it left me without a hotel at a busy period, and have to cut my trip short. On top of that, the manager was hostile with us for leaving, and we faced one of their regular ‘drinkers’ follow us out and huff and puff at us!

The landlord was wonderful and willing to go the extra mile for his guests. The room was very comfortable and cosy, complete with a desk and chair. I didn't have a problem with the room's artwork depicting the female form, but I can see why this might not be to everyone's taste! The shower looked modern and worked really well, but no shower gel or shampoo was provided. The one thing that really bugged me was the dodgy Cloud wifi, which was both unsecure and unreliable. Worked ok in the pub but kept dropping out in the room. And I couldn't get it to work at all on my Samsung phone. Although you can park on the road outside, I don't recommend this as the road is quite narrow and frequently used by wide heavy farm machinery. Fortunately there is a free car park by the village hall, less than a 2 minute walk away. Windows were single-glazed so didn't keep the noise out, but the road outside is pretty quiet (apart from said machinery) so it's not really a problem.

Tim and his dog Mowgli were the best hosts! Tim is lovely and nothing was too much of a hassle for him. The rooms are pretty basic but clean, cosy and have a kettle and coffee/tea, etc. I'd recommend staying here!

Enjoyable stay at the royal oak pub

Tim was a lovely helpful chap, nice large room with comfortable bed. Additional towels & loo roll would be useful. The place had a lively bar with pool table. Location was ideal for travelling around area to some lovely nearby beaches etc.

6/10 Good

The room itself was clean with all the expected facilities, it was also big. However, the areas outside the room stairs and corridor leave a lot to be desired. This is a lively pub so don't expect a quite night before the pub closes.

Pub is very old school and unique and full of character to the land lords taste. Room neat and tidy, but some work needed on the entrance to the sleeping quarters. Owner and staff very friendly and helpful.

You get what you pay for!

I had read the reviews of this place and, looking at the pictures thought I was stopping in a small, local "gastro pub". On arrival, the young lady was most helpful, as was the owner the next day. The one thing I failed to notice on the web site was the "dog friendly" bit. There is an aroma all around the place, even in the room I stopped in. The room was small and cluttered. It backed on to the beer garden as well, which meant it was noisy until the pub closed. Breakfast was ok. The web site indicates that it was recently refurbished, but there was no sign of this. Some of the images on the web-site are also "stock images". The pub is generally tired looking and in need of some attention.

Visiting home

Return ’home’ after years away. Tim is a fine host, room was cosy and clean. Eclectic collection of art pieces might not suit everyone but fine for us.

2/10 Poor

This was booked for my parents for a short Christmas stay. The room was tiny - far smaller than it appeared on the website. There was rubbish around the stairs. The ‘eclectic’ bedroom was just stained and ramshackle. It was so bad, that they didn’t stay for more than 10 minutes and the owner clearly didn’t care or offer any form of refund. Avoid!!!!
