The place is incredible. It is in the middle of a fjord and you see glaciers and it is just so cozy and confy you want to stay a lifetime there. You have a game area, super nice living rooms and the food us super good. Cheers to Lorentz who hosted us!

Fantastic Hotel from another time!

This was our favorite stay of our entire trip to Norway! Beautiful vistas, a waterfall within hiking distance and warm, friendly service from the owners and staff that made us feel at home immediately. The evening dinner we had at the Hjelle Hotel was absolutely perfect! The walks we took here were so beautiful and everything was so peaceful! Cannot rate it high enough!

This was one of my husbands and I favorite places we stayed here in Norway. It felt like staying with family. By far the most beautiful location, we even took a cold swim. The dinner was excellent, so delicious. We stayed in the motel external building and it was so clean and such a cute vintage place. We loved it! Highly recommend!

Old World Charm and Hospitality in the Mountains

One of the loveliest and most charming places among all the hotels we stayed, over a two week road trip through Norway. Lorentz is a superlative host, perhaps the fourth generation innkeeper. Emma is a fabulous cook and baker, breakfasts were delicious and generous. Her homemade sourdough breads and desserts helped fuel our day. One must take dinner at Hjelle Hotel. They were prepared and presented beautifully and hit just the right spot after a day of hiking and touring. In the morning, the elegant dining room was filled with sunlight and in the evening we ate by candlelight. The hotel is nestled along the shore of a gorgeous lake, fed by glacial melt, surrounded by mountains. Hjelle Hotel is THE place to stay if you love to hike, to breath fresh air, to take in the beauty of the mountains and to get a good night's sleep, it's quiet and peaceful.

We (myself, husband and toddler) stayed for 3 nights in late May 2025. It was a last minute booking for an impromptu trip to Norway. We had no issues with late check in or late check out. The view and setting of this place are 12/10; the pics speak the truth! It is situated ~23 min from Stryn and ~60min from Geiranger. It was an excellent home base. The grounds are well kept. We stayed in the old historic building. It was a bit tight to leave the suitcases open and walk around in The Wilhelmina suite. The balcony had an amazing view. There was a mini fridge. No safe (no hotels on our trip had a safe). The springwater bathtub and heated bathroom floors were a nice touch. The bathroom curtains were shorter than the window and also sheer. Given that a small portion of the view includes a parking lot and the cafe, we did improvise by putting decorative cushions on the window sill for our comfort. The host was the most helpful person we have come across on a trip; he helped us make plans for all 3 days and they worked out for us. He helped us with alternative plans when it rained. We were going to run out of clean clothes and he was able to arrange laundry for us for a neglible fee. The breakfast was on par with similarly reviewed hotels in W Norway. Breakfast is held in a large food hall with views of the lake and mountains. They had toys my toddler loved. It is a beautiful family run place away from the crowds and with lots of character. Definitely a must stay!
