Fabulous, cosy Hotel. Clean, comfortable and dog friendly. The staff here are so friendly, helpful and genuinely can't do enough for you. Had the best nights sleep-the bed was so very comfortable. The breakfast and the food in the bar is delicious, plentyful, well presented and a great choice of menu. Our only criticism is there are no outdoor bins to dispose of used doggy bags. We will definately be going back though.

Stayed at the Sun solo for a couple of nights. Great location in terms of access to the mountains and close to shops/pubs. Very welcoming staff, clean and comfortable bedroom with great views. Breakfast was strong - plenty of options, full english was delicious. Pub within the hotel was great - roaring open fire to heat up after being out on the mountains, loads of local ales. Basic but characterful hotel, room very warm in winter with good views. A little old-fashioned but in many respects charmingly so. Excellent breakfast in the more modern conservatory extension. A lot of steps although that was a trade-off with the views from the room. Good at the price since much in Coniston is quite expensive. Shame the restaurant wasn't operational in the evening on this visit, but as the staff pointed out, it's only a short walk to Coniston's centre where there is plenty of choice. Reasonable amount of parking on site.

Disaster and security issue

Where do we start? We checked in and then left about 4pm to go and surprise our friends camping by the lake. The keys are large and bulky so left them with reception. We came back at 10.45 but all was in darkness ( it's a pub as well) . We pushed the front door and it opened and went inside the pub but part of it was sectioned off via a couple doors that were all locjed. That was great as our keys were on the other side of the locked doors! We pressed the button in reception but no one came we then called the telephone number on the website and we could hear it ringing but no reply. So there we are in a hotel with nobody available and we had no keys to our room. This was now around 11.15pm we realised we could access the lounge area so we left down on the two settees and tried to get to sleep. That's how we spent the night in a hotel charging £100 for the privilege. The owner turned up at around 7.30am and we immediately asked for our room key and explained the situation. He asked how we got into the pub without the front door key - we explained the front door was open. This is dangerous as anyone could have got in and broken into any of the bedrooms and some where occupied, it also meant anything could have been stolen. The manager then suggested we should have gone to his house which was around 40m away- how did we know where he lived we had only been there for one night. No apology and certainly no goodwill. It's the first time we have slept on a sofa 50ft from our room!

Ideal location and very comfortable

Perfect for a last minute overnight stay in the lakes. Picked as it was the ideal location to the walk we planned. Room was small, but was perfect for what we needed. Very clean, all the required facilities, and the staff were amazing. Breakfast was also delicious.

This was basic but did the job. I found the lack of attention toward customer experience disappointing. There was no ambience/ background music at breakfast making it all quite awkward and very quiet. No effort was made to mop up the table and floor from the leaking conservatory roof at breakfast, making one of the tables and chairs for breakfast unusable, which I found surprising. The service was slow (magnified by the poor ambience) and when it did arrive my beans arrived cold and needed returning for heating. My shower temperature could not be regulated, but was constantly very hot as opposed to cold and so could be used dipping in and out. Cleanliness was poor, however I was expecting something more rough and ready from the pictures and so wasn’t surprised. A fantastic location and good pub evening environment and atmosphere.

The only criticism i have is too late for booking in and on a personal note i think 08:30 is a little late for breakfast. Beside that i found the place fantastic. Great accommodation and friendly staff and ideally situated for exploring the lake district.

A decent place to stay! The room was fine, if a little cold, but the additional heater warmed it up well. The bed was comfy and the breakfast was excellent. The staff were very friendly and I had a lovely pint in the bar. Coniston is well worth a visit and The Sun is definitely worth staying at.

My wife and I were due to be staying at The Sun for a second time having thoroughly enjoyed our previous visit. Unfortunately, I fractured my ankle the week before our latest trip and the management team at The Sun were extremely understanding and accomodating a booking move at short notice, something they weren't required to do via Hotels.co.uk.
